Dinner Out?

Brother Theopyle is speaking into the telephone. "Dinner on Friday? That sounds lovely. But unfortunately, I can’t. You see, my uncle died again, and I have to attend his funeral.”

Surprised, Rabbit asks, "Say what? Your uncle died … again?”

Theo replies, “Yea, well, here’s the thing. I don't much like dining out with others. Too much drinking and gossiping and fussing about. But I don’t know how to say that.”

Rabbit suggests, “Why don't you just say, ‘No, thank you’?”

Editor’s Note: We offer this cartoon with a grateful bow to Jules Renard, who reminds us, “The only man who is really free is the one who can turn down an invitation to dinner without giving an excuse”.
