A TRILOGY

healing

when she came to consciousness
all was foggy and snug
in a space of
acute transformation
aware only of
irreversibility
limbs and body
unwillingly still
paralyzed
hours
went by
days weeks months
drifting in and out of
pain
to grow new wings
to mend fragments of
her heart
to heal

the power animals
came
her cougar
brought whispers and threads of
love and compassion
sparks of
new life
she breathed in
and merged with
his power
she smiled
they recently saw
magnificent white-feathered wings
she
over the tall grass of Serengeti
was
towards the sacred
and
towards
herself

Open Space

up

free fall

she was falling
through
layers of life
events thoughts actions
and
feelings
anger rage grief sadness
and
solitude

she was falling
until
the core
powerful and vulnerable
absorbing and reflecting
all that
is
all that
was

she observed
amazed
and then
amused
the initial set of
events thoughts actions and feelings
coming together
and then
apart
in
patterns
of
endless permutations
variant outcomes
depending on
the angle of
view

she stayed and pondered
she laughed and then cried
she danced

when she resurfaced
she was
forever
different
yet
the same

of all things
her gaze
her movements
were
lighter
more elusive

Open Space

up

a dream

she was exhausted
fourteen months
of and in
sustained hypervigilance
to keep
her integrity
the purity of intent
while fighting hard

she moved

on higher ground
rested her face
touched the roots of a tree
for comfort

sleep came
running
dreams
within
dreams
and
messages
encrypted

for long
she kept rearranging
images feelings fragments
of
thoughts sensations symbols

a white hawk
shy and powerful
among others
speckled gray and brown
“if you hold the talons
gently
he will stay with you”
someone whispered

her father’s hand
supporting guiding her

glimpses of men
who loved her
or
said so

her cougar
pacing
in allotted despair
she hugged him
sobbing
then
he
was free
and
startled
that in the space of dreams
thought
and
density of intent
result
in
concrete actions

the sun
touched her face
it was time
to go
to continue
her journey
